Can AI Replace Therapy?
More people are turning to AI when they feel anxious, lonely, overwhelmed or simply need somewhere to express their thoughts. It is easy to see why. AI is available at any time, responds instantly and can feel easier than opening up to another person.
But can it replace therapy?
AI can be useful for organising thoughts, journaling or helping us put difficult feelings into words. However, therapy offers something different: a genuine human relationship.
A therapist gets to know you over time. They can notice patterns in how you think, feel and relate to others, including things you may not recognise yourself. Therapy is not simply about receiving advice. It is about understanding why certain feelings or difficulties keep appearing and finding new ways of responding to them.
AI also has limitations. It can give responses that sound convincing but may not be accurate or appropriate for your individual circumstances, particularly when you are experiencing significant emotional distress.
Perhaps it does not need to be AI versus therapy. AI can be a useful tool, but it cannot recreate the connection, understanding and trust that can develop between two people in therapy.
If something has been weighing on you, you do not have to wait until you reach breaking point before seeking support. Sometimes having a space where you can simply be heard is the first step towards change.
